3 x 2 Year Old Asparagus Connovers Colossal in 9cm Pots For a taste of pure luxury nothing beats freshly cut asparagus and you can save a small fortune on shop prices when you grow your own. Considered by many to be a gourmet treat, asparagus is grown for its succulent tasty spears that can be harvested for up to eight weeks from mid-spring onwards. Asparagus Connover's Colossal is a tried-and-tested heritage variety from the 1800's that is known for its reliability, exceptionally high yield and flavour - so much so that many commercial growers grow this variety almost exclusively. Awarded an Award of Garden Merit by The Royal Horticultural Society, you can be sure that this variety will perform perfectly in your garden, producing bright green spears tipped with purple. From the second year after planting pick a few spears then from the third year after planting pick as often as you can from late April to late June. The 21st is the traditional day to stop picking after when the spears should be allowed to develop into fern for the rest of the year. Remove the dead fern in late winter, apply a general-purpose fertiliser and then just wait for the next tasty crop. Keep your asparagus bed tidy and weed free and this variety will crop for 15 years or more.
