Description
Thompson & Morgan Rhododendron ‘Luteum’ has showy, golden yellow blooms that fill the air with perfume throughout May and June with a sweet, powerful fragrance. The mid-green leaves of this deciduous yellow Azalea display fiery shades of orange in autumn, providing seasonal interest well into October. This large Azalea forms a rounded, open shrub which will cope well in a sunny position provided the soil remains moist. Thompson & Morgan Rhododendron ‘Luteum’ will make a striking specimen plants for woodland style gardens, or when grown in in large acid borders alongside other shrubs and trees. Grow Thompson & Morgan Rhododendrons in moist, well-drained, acidic soil that has been enriched with plenty of well-rotted organic material. Choose a sheltered position in semi or dappled-shade away from cold, drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position as long as the soil remains moist. For alkaline soils, Rhododendrons are best grown in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous and soil based composts. Thompson & Morgan Rhododendrons are surface rooting so take care not to plant them too deeply. Water Thompson & Morgan Rhododendrons regularly throughout their growing season and, where possible, use rainwater as tap water may reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants, and protect from cold winds during winter. Rhododendrons grown in borders will appreciate mulching in autumn to protect their shallow roots from cold. When mulching, take care not to mound up around the stem as this may cause rot. Lightly prune Thompson & Morgan Rhododendrons in June where necessary to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
