Georg Joseph Kamel was an early eighteenth century Jesuit missionary in the Philippines. He was also a pharmacist and a keen botanist - because at that time almost all medicines were derived from plants. But what made Kamel famous was the discovery of two purely ornamental flowers. The first was the camellia (the Latin form of his name is Camellus) while the second was the fabulous orchid featured here. Apparently he found it totally bewitching and declared it to be the most beautiful flower in the world!As for the name, it had to be Aphrodite - the Greek goddess of love, femininity and beauty.
