Description
This fabulous herbaceous Clematis has a self-supporting, bush forming habit that is perfect for bulking up perennial borders with vigorous clumps of dense foliage. The star-shaped, indigo blooms of Clematis 'New Love' have slender, reflexed petals and a lovely sweet fragrance. This spectacular variety is best grown among tall perennials such as Lupins, Foxgloves, and Delphiniums and makes a superb gap filler for cottage garden planting schemes. Position in full sun or partial shade and plant in moist, fertile soil that is well drained. Clematis do not particularly like over wet, or dry soils, so if this is the case, conditions can be improved by the addition of manure or compost. Pruning should be undertaken in spring before active growth begins. When pruning group 3 Clematis, cut back all of the previous year’s stems to a pair of healthy buds at around 20cm above ground level. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
