The leaves appear almost translucent on a sunny day, and change to marvellous copper tones by the autumn. The Smoke Bush will grow in many different soils, and enjoys sun or shade, and does not need any complicated pruning. Your Smoke Bush will require little pruning other than to maintain its shape, and to remove any dead, diseased or damaged growth. Alternatively, to produce larger, showier foliage, you can cut back stems during spring to within 2 or 3 buds of the base. After pruning, mulch the base of your plants with a few inches of well-rotted compost or manure.
