Eryngium Planum 3 Bare Root Plants
Description
The ideal, drought tolerant and resilient plant for a coastal garden, but also great for a cottage garden mixed border. Eryngium planum (Sea Holly) puts on a long lasting display every summer of blue spiky flowers on rigid upright silver-green stems. Not only are these architectural plants strong and reliable, but their nectar-rich flowers are beneficial to wildlife too, attracting bees and butterflies. Perfect for a hot, sunny space and also suitable for exposed sites, a great choice for plugging gaps in the border. Pot up plants and grow them on in frost free conditions until all risk of frost has passed. When plants are well grown, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before transplanting into borders and containers. The herbaceous perennials in this collection can be grown in any moist, fertile soil, in sun or semi shade. Work some compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil prior to planting. Grow sea holly plants on light, well drained soil in full sun. Eryngium plants particularly dislike cold, wet soil in winter which may cause the crown to rot. If planting on heavy soils, dig in plenty of coarse grit to improve drainage prior to planting. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until plants are fully established. Leave faded eryngium flower heads in place until spring to benefit from the winter interest they will add to your borders. In cold wet soils, use a cloche to protect the crown of the plant from winter rainfall. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of eryngium in spring. Only lift it when necessary as sea holly can be slow to re-establish.
