Vintage Collectible WWII U.S. NAVY Supply Commissioned Officer Corps Napkin Ring in great vintage condition. Measures 1 3/4 across & 1 3/4 thick. This beautiful vintage WWII U.S. Navy Officer's Napkin Ring showcases a Navy Officer's Silver Eagle Badge Pin on one side with the beautiful shield & anchors. & the other side has the Oak Leaf with Acorns that represents the Commissioned Officer position as a Supply Corps Officer. The Navy Supply Corps traces its beginnings to February 23, 1795 when the nation's first Purveyor of Public Supplies, Tench Francis, Jr., was appointed by President George Washington. The Supply Corps is one of the oldest staff corps in the U.S. Navy. Supply Corps officers are tasked with supply, logistics, combat support, readiness, contracting & fiscal issues. Within the wardroom (the commissioned officers' dining area aboard a warship), Navy Supply Corps officers are colloquially called pork chops. Apparently, this nickname references the shape of the oak leaf insignia found on officers' sleeves & collars, as it vaguely looks like a pork chop. They are also referred to as SuppO (short for Supply Officer), but that is typically used for senior officers. The official motto of the Supply Corps is Ready for Sea - reflecting the Supply Corps' longstanding role in sustaining war-fighting.
