Etsy - AzulTribe 19Th Century Silk Ikat Chapan Robe Central Asia
Description
This is an atlas or shahi/shohi Ikat chapan of soft & shiney silk warp & silk weft. Beautifully & precisely hand stitched & lightly padded. Tajik, Ferghana Valley. Last quarter of 19th century. The trim seen here is a common trait in many ikats & suzanis in last quarter of 19th century. The stitching looks like its from the early Singer sewing machines. This material was handwoven into the 1920s. Bukhara & the Ferghana Vally were the centers if Shohi ikate production. It is very wearable & in perfect condition. Some of the stitching round the top has pulled a little (see photo), but it is all there. There two colours of purple with a very light pink. The lushious Russian red floral interior cotton lining is in good order & condition. Red was an extremely popular colour. The whole hangs nicely. Sleeves were always a little long. It is a feature of this type of garment. No holes or stains. A similar ikat design is illustrated on p 57 in Susan Meller's Silk & Cotton Textiles from Central Asia pub.
