Using candles was a necessity here & overseas well into the 1950's. Many homes did not have a consistent supply of electricity. Candles & oil lamps dominated the homes early in 1902 but became more of a back up source of light as the decades wore on. Royal Doulton, ever the maker of fine & beautiful porcelain, created a pattern called Autumn, that graced plates & dinnerware as well as tea pots, flower urns, & other additions to the household china. This pattern is on this candlestick & I have never seen a candlestick for the Autumn pattern Plates galore - yes. Candlesticks - no. The water well, or the deep well of the candlestick is meant to prevent a fire from someone falling asleep or the candle burning down to the base of the porcelain & possibly starting a fire or breaking the candlestick from the intense heat. Want to use it now? Yankee & Goose Creek & Colonial all sell scented tapers. You can use unscented, but why not have some romance & get the scent. Just a suggestion. Hallmark dates the piece to between 1902 & 1922. Crazing commensurate with age. No chips or damage. Some rough bubbling of the glaze pictured under the mules. A time honored scene of honest labor & real work. Candlestick measures 6 1/4 in diameter & stands 3 high at the handle.
