Vintage framed print of a Toulouse-Lautrec poster advertising the Divan Japonais, a cabaret venue, one of many amusements featured on posters of the time. Nineteenth century guide books described Paris as ''The capital of pleasure'' with thousands of theatres, dance-halls, cafes, circuses, racetracks & other entertainments. Posters advertising these events were made possible by the development of colour lithography. The clever, eye-catching posters of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec ( 1864-1901 ) immortalized such places as the Cabaret Divan Japonais. Here we see in the audience popular dancer Jane Avril & critic Edouard Dujardin. in the background, beyond the musicians, is the singer Yvette Guilbert. Her face is not shown but she is recognisable due to the very unkind description of her by a journalist, who said: ''She has no bosom to speak of & her chest is quite extraordinarily narrow. She has long -too long - thin arms clad in high black gloves that look like flimsy streamers'' I don't think he would get away with this today ! This picture is one of two I found which had been professionally framed & are ready to hang. Add to a gallery wall or hang alone. I have always loved these French posters & was immediately drawn to this when I found it. Will fit into a traditional or contemporary home. Also great for a cafe or bar setting. Picture measures 13 1/4 tall x 10 wide. It has been framed in a thin, black frame which is simple & suits the poster style print very well. Can be seen in photos 5,6 & 7 with the other available print. in very good condition, very minor marks to the frame . Weight 673g without wrapping. Other framed poster is listed separately.
