Description
An antique chamberstick in solid brass is an evocative & unique piece. The relief pattern on the handle, the stylised flower motifs & the brass composition are pure art nouveau. Made aroud 1905, it is hallmarked with two patents. Its German patent reads D.R. Patent Angmeldet (which stands for Deutsches Reich Registered Patent) & its Austrian one reads K.K Oestr Patent, which stands for Kaiserlich-Kniglich sterreich (or Imperial Royal Austria) Patent. The German patent (fers to the unusual flower-shaped gripper. At a time when candles were made by hand, their diameters varied. A taper candle of any width could be inserted into the aperture. By sliding a scalloped disc that resembles a flower head upwards, a series of flexible tongs squeeze hold of the candle. A product of the Arts & Crafts era, it's a perfect blend of form & function. There are some areas of age-related patina as shown in the photos. Because the various components are held together with a flathead screw, everything can be taken apart for cleaning. Approximate measurements in cm are 7H x 8W x 14L.
