This is an antique glass lustre or luster. Made in the mid to late 19th century of opalescent white enamelled & gilded glass probably in France or Bohemia. The central section is hung with wired prisms. The decorations are forget me nots, scrolls & garlands. Generally in good condition just wear to the gilding & a couple of losses to the prisms see photos. Size is 16cm diameter x 34cm high in France in the 17th century in France a glass prism was called a,Luster. Candle holders, hung with prisms between 1850-1890, were also called, Lusters. Lusters are now mantle or table decorations,or a pedestal vase, hung with prisms. Lusters are elaborate candle holders to set on a mantle,sideboard or table. It comprises a candlestick with a glass bowl that the candle sets in, circled with prisms. in theory the prisms,(lusters), helped to produce more light from the candles. The prisms got there name of lusters, from the colors they would produce when struck by sunlight. The Victorians considered the height of elegant living to own lusters.
