Hi. My name is Debbi Varela & I'm a landscape photographer that loves photographing the southwest! The scorching sun of June bore down on us as I led my family into the heart of the Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend. Each step echoed with the promise of discovery, & the weight of initiation; for this wasn't just any hike, it was the rite of passage for my children, their first true dance with the wild. The heat, intense & relentless, was a test of our resolve. It wrapped around us, challenging our determination at every bend. Yet, as the path unfurled, the grandeur of the canyon rose around us, a testament to nature's timeless might. Towering walls of rock, etched with the tales of eons, flanked us on both sides, whispering secrets of the ancient land. With every step, I watched the wonder bloom in my kids' eyes. The enormity of the canyon, the play of shadows & light, the distant call of a bird - it was as if they were truly seeing the world for the first time. Their small, determined steps, their occasional wide-eyed gazes & gasps of amazement, painted a picture of pure, innocent awe. in that majestic canyon, I saw not just the beauty of the world around me, but the dawning of a new chapter for my children. The heat, the vastness, the challenge - it was all part of the grand tapestry of their first real adventure. & as we pushed forward, I could sense the birth of heroes, young explorers forging their own bond with the wild, a bond that, I hoped, would last a lifetime.
