Large Wood & soda fired stoneware mug , with some interesting melt & red reduction on blasted side, & a more subtle matt brown with a touch of spiral design on shadow side. Large comfortable handle, nice to hold the round shape in your hands. I try to make the most comfortable mug I've ever used & I have more than several favorites at home myself... Soda firing is an atmospheric firing method, where the glaze is made in the firing process, not just melted. For the last few hours of the firing, I spray a solution of soda ash & water into the fire box, which is carried through the kiln with the flames, steam & heat, instantly vaporizing & bonding with the unglazed surfaces of the clay. This creates variation in color over the surface, a result of different amounts of soda buildup. This means that each piece is a one of a kind, unrepeatable treasure.
