It was a dream come true! Italy trip starting off with Venice. The scenery was amazing & the food was also amazing. Oh the pizza! Nothing will ever be the same. These photographs are the from the waterways, bridges, streets & canals of Venice. No cars, lots of boats & gondolas. It is an amazing bustling place. Since horses were outlawed from the streets of Venice, the gondola became the primary transportation for hundreds of years. There were tens of thousands of them & now there are just a few hundred. The powered boat taxis took over as the main form of transportation & the gondola is now a colorful way to see the canals up close. The weather took a turn & even though the skies looked threatening at times, they cleared up some & let us have a fun day. It did rain eventually & it was time for a break & some great Italian food. It is very hard to take a photograph during the day without any people walking into your shot. Some people will wait & let you complete your shot while others do not even notice. Eventually, it happens, you get your shot & you move on. I wanted to show pieces of Venice, old buildings, drama; some of which you don't normally see. I did walk through different streets & found dark alleys to create some the drama I was looking for. It takes quite a bit of patience to create a composition that is compatible to one's style. Most photographers do not want people in their photos unless it is a travel photo & in that case the people are sometimes prominent or maybe a silhouette is enough. People give you a sense of scale, especially when it comes to large landscapes & cityscapes such as mountains & buildings. The photographer has to choose with intent which is better for the subject. After being told that Venice has a smell or that the water is dirty & then finding out that neither was the case was encouraging. I didn't expect the amount of hustle & bustle along the steps & streets as well as the Rialto bridge. Some of the photos were taken while enjoying a serenaded gondola ride through the canals.
