A pilots chair from an Aerospatiale GazelleAH1 helicopter. The Gazelle was used by the Royal Navy, Royal Air force & the Army in a reconnaissance role. They were supplied from Aerospatiale & then later versions were license built by Westland. This chair has a dataplate that says it was made in 1976. Cleaning the chair we have found teh remains of the aircraft code written on the back. This confirms that this chair was used in Aerospatiale Gazelle XZ301 an AH1 that was first flown in Sept 1977 & delivered into the Army in Oct 1976. She was transferred to the Shawbury Store in July 2005 & then to Middle Wallop in Nov 2008 to be broken into spares. We believe that this is the the Left hand - co-pilot seat that was intended to be hinged forward to allow a stretcher to be carried - as outlined on the second plate on the rear & shown in the last picture taken from the manual. To convert this chair into a usable everyday item we have acquired & undertaken the following : A new 6mm aluminium sheet has been cut & shaped to take the original sliding bolts from the rear of the seat. Two new Westland front seat hinges have been acquired & fitted to the front leading edge. Two quick release pins have been acquired to hold the seat onto the hinges & to allow it to hinge forward & to be removed for transport. A quality chromed swivel base has been acquired that has four adjustable feet to allow it to be used on uneven or flat floors. Two 30mm thick HDPE blocks have been added between the base & the aluminium to bring the seta to the comfortable height for use. All new bolts in stainless steel with nylocks to ensure along life. The original seat cushions have been washed & refitted. A new lower cushion has been fashioned to fill the space for the survival pack. A sheepskin cover has been added to the seat surface as used in service. The chair back has been cleaned back & the original heavily glued velcro has been removed & the paint waxed.
