Vintage antique reverse painted glass & metal tray with geisha design. This is a beautiful yet unusual vintage glass & metal tray, the likes of which we have never seen before! At first glance, it appears to be an example of a vintage (perhaps Art Deco) metal framed tray with a hand painted reverse painted glass design on maroon featuring two Japanese Geisha's sitting opposite each other with gold trees & the sun rising over the horizon in the background. They are wearing Kimonos, Obis & traditional hair ornaments. On closer inspection however, it becomes clear that the Geisha's dresses are in fact pieces of fabric sitting behind their painted form on the glass. Moreover, the ladies are sitting in a pool of - literally - glittered light, perhaps representing the first morning rays of sun. The tray has a wooden base & the metal frame & ornate handles are fastened securely with screws. They show surface scratching in places & some dents, in particular to the top left corner. There is some loss of maroon background paint especially above the trees revealing a gilt colour underneath, but with just a passing glance this can be mistaken for foliage. Please look carefully at the pictures to see for yourself. The tray measures 29.3 cm by 20.2 cm & the sides are just over 2 cm tall. The handles are 6.5 cm across their widest point & protrude 2.5 cm either side. It weighs 593g. This is in fair to good antique / vintage condition, a beautiful & romantic nod to faded grandeur. Trays such as these were popular in the Art Deco period & were used both as serving trays (usually for drinks) or as vanity trays on a dressing table.
