A very very well loved Victorian piece of tableware from 1875, this is a decorative, fancy napkin holder with a lily pad & lily, holding up the circular napkin ring...very elegant. The napkin holder ring is bent - see PICS 3, 9 & 10 - there must be a story to tell here - a mystery - how did it lose its circular shape? CONDITION: there are scuffs, scratches, wearing of the silver plating, & bending of the napkin holder tube. IT is NOT POLISHED. & just soap & water cleaned. SIZE: 3 & 5/8ths inches W x 2.5 in. T x 3 & 1/8 inches deep. There is a rectangle on top which is for engraving & the antique piece is in fact engraved. The initials J & G in lovely stylized cursive are surrounded by little tendrils. The lily pad is scored like a real one with veins going outward, the flower stem wraps like a handle & the napkin ring (holder) has scrolling & pretty engraving as well. I was able to date this antique fairly accurately to 1875 because I found a similar one with the exact same backstamp (where the word curves underneath (not seen in later backstamps) on the site Heritage Auctions USA. Made by the prestigious Simpson, Hall, Miller & Company, established originally by Samuel Simpson in 1866, in Wallingford, Connecticut. He experimented with electro silver plating holloware & by 1882, he was advertising quadruple silver plating, & later in 1875, creating sterling silver pieces too. NOTE: I have not polished the piece, & the patina is original. The black shading throughout the item is patina from age & use, which makes it interesting with a story! We are often told by silversmiths not to remove the patina & to let a professional polish it, in order not to damage the silver. Will be very safely packed & mailed!
