Description
HAND-PAINTED VICTORIAN WALL MIRROR WITH RARE LABEL From the 1800's. A rare & original mirror which is designed to be hung on the diagonal. It features hand-painted flowers to the glass & is bordered by a deep textured wood frame made by Brownson & Shaw. Their label can be seen on the back with the address at 36 County Arcade Leeds. This spectacular Arcade was built 150 years ago & Brownson Shaw would have been one of the first tenants. I used to live nearby in the 1980's & often called into the Arcade to see the magnificent ceiling & the huge world-renowned Potts Clock. One could easily imagine Messrs Shaw & Brownson toiling at their bench a century prior whilst also enjoying the view of that wondrous clock! The remarkable frame is an artwork in itself with its wide border & uncommon scrolled wood carvings. It is designed to hang on the diagonal & to the back are still the old Victorian hooks properly placed to achieve this position. Of course it can be hung any way you wish by adding separate hooks but it looks absolutely charming as originally intended. The antique hardware is also a joy to see. The back has old sharp nails so care must be taken when handling or if near small children. One could replace the nails but they too are in keeping with the character. There is some minor wood loss to the frame, however it is so detailed & ornate that it doesn't impact on either its form or its function. Measures 12" by 12" & 16" on the diagonal. Or 30 x 30 x 40cms. It will be very well packaged & sent to your home by Royal Mail Tracked & Signed Service. Fully insured door-to-door.
