Champlev is an ancient deeply carved enamel technique used in the decorative arts to decorate metal surfaces. in this technique, colored glass paste is filled into the cavities, slots & holes opened on the artifact & baked. French sculptor & entrepreneur Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) worked all his life with the best sculptors & designers of the time. Barbedienne, whose craft is cherished, was elected president of the Bronze Craftsmen's Union in 1865 & held the presidency for 20 years. This candlestick was made in France in the early 19th century in the Ferdinand Barbedienne style. There is also a marble pedestal in the middle of the candlestick.
