The Flammarion engraving is a wood engraving by an unknown artist, so named because its first documented appearance is in Camille Flammarion's 1888 book L'atmosphre : mtorologie populaire (The Atmosphere: Popular Meteorology). It has been used as a metaphorical illustration of either the scientific or the mystical quests for knowledge. A beautiful solid piece of 5/8 inch Maple, engraving of the Flammarion woodcut. This piece is deep engraved & highly detailed. The wood is hand finished solid Hard Maple, 7 3/4 x 9 3/8 x 5/8 finished with a soft wax for a pleasant feel, & oil to resist scratching. The Maple wood is quite dense giving the piece a pleasant substantial weight. Ready to hang via small hanging bracket on the backside.
