A beautifully made 19th century highly detailed silver plated figural napkin ring made by Meriden Britannia Co. boasting a bird gracefully perched on the upturned stem of a maple leaf. The ring itself is decorated around its middle with festoons of flowers & leaves these, in turn, flanking an unengraved area intended for a name or monogram. The borders of the ring are embellished with a zig-zag pattern intermixed with what appears to be tiny flowers. The bird, leaf & stem with their incredible detail from the veins in the leaf, texture to the stem & soft feathers of the bird, is sure to please any nature lover, bird watcher and/or napkin ring collector! Approximate dimensions: 3 1/4 L x 3 1/4 W x 3 H. Marked on the bottom on one corner of the leaf is the manufacturer's mark, M.B.Co./202/U.S.A.. Meriden Britannia Co. was established in 1852 through a merger of a number of independent manufacturers of Britannia ware (a type of metal) all located in Meriden, CT. The company produced both plated & non plated wares which they supplied to other firms. The combination of Meriden Britannia's production of quality wares & heavy marketing campaign, along with earning first prize at Philadelphia's Centennial Exposition, allowed the company remarkable expansion with a short twenty years of existence, eventually having locations in such major centers of fashion & design as Paris, London, Chicago, San Francisco & New York. in 1898, like so many other East Coast silversmiths, Meriden Britannia joined forces as part of International Silver. Wear commensurate with age & use including minor loss/wear to silver plate. I did polish this though some areas are heavily tarnished.
