Description
A close up profile of an elephant, a photograph that could hang in children's rooms to inspire them about the amazing nature we are surrounded by, was my quest on my latest African trip. Elephants are kindly but they're dumb, sang Simon & Garfunkel in the 1970s. Nothing could be further from the truth. These amazing animals have sophisticated emotion, family structure, & memories. They've been known to return to the site of a family member's death years after the fact, just to complete their mourning process. Mother elephants carry their young for 22 months. Imagine that! & their devotion to their young does not stop there, as elephant mothers care tenderly for their young, sometimes refusing to leave a sickly or dying baby at the risk of being isolated from their own herd. They're also a keystone species. That means that their presence is crucial to the survival of an entire ecosystems. If you're driving through the bush, it's easy to see when elephants have recently passed by, because there's trees by the score lying torn apart on the ground. These large gentle giants have to consume 700 pounds of food a day. Because they have terrible digestion, the remains of what they have not digested are often deposited on the ground through their travels. Their consumptive habits mean they clear open space that's in danger of becoming too full of brush for critical endangered species to survive (like cheetahs). in addition, they contribute to reforestation as well, because where they poop, there's seeds. These seeds benefit other small animals & birds that feed on it, but it also contributes to biodiversity & expansion of variety of foliage. The results of their binging & pooping play an irreversible role in maintaining the viability of wildlife areasa critical contribution since this habitat loss is proceeding at a terrifying rate, threatening the survival of all kinds of species. They are also critically endangered themselves. The big tuskers are basically all gonethe poachers have nabbed them all, butchering them terribly for the ivory in their tusks. Elephants have actually now started to breed without tusks, as a result of those with tusks being removed from the gene pool. It's a tough life for an elephant without tusks, as they use them to extract food from the bark of trees, water from the often dry river beds, & all kinds of other tasks essential to elephant life. Their habitat has decreased 50% since 1979, & habitat is obviously crucial to animals with such voracious appetites. There are only about 40,000 elephants left in the wild today. They are listed as critically endangered by the folks that certify these sad statistics.
