The Hawaiian Islands are hand carved out of 1 Koa wood planks. Koa is a rare & precious wood endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. in the Hawaiian language, Koa means brave, bold, fearless, or warrior. Koa wood is becoming more & more difficult to get as the trees are endangered & the wood can only be harvested after the tree has fallen naturally. My koa wood comes from the slopes of the Big Island of Hawaii where the trees grow best at higher elevations. After harvest, I allow my wood to cure for a period of at least two years before use. I individually hand carve the 8 Hawaiian Islands, creating valleys & mountains that echo the terrain of each island. I use a carving tool to sculpt free hand, no programmed machinery is used in my process. Once carved, I hand sand each Island twice, first with a rough grit & then with a fine grit sand paper. Then I finish the islands with a natural oil finish or a satin lacquer finish. The Islands can then be hung on the wall with your choice of either saw tooth hangers or magnets. Greg will then sign on the back of the Big Island. Koa wood is famous for its variety of colors. Please contact the artist as colors will vary. First look up the Hawaiian Islands on a map. This will give you an idea of the relative distance between the islands. Next figure out your wall space. Get a small piece of tape, painters blue tape works well, & place it in the center of where the Big Island will hang. This will be on the lower right side of your space. Then do the same for each of the islands working your way down the island chain using the map to maintain the appropriate relative distance between the islands. If you want the island chain to cover a larger area on the wall, just spread the islands out maintaining the appropriate relative distances between them.
