Stunning vintage mid century nautilus shell vase by Australian makers Pates Potteries. Makers mark stamped on base Maroon red & mint green glaze Large size 23 x 18 x 13 cm Circa 1946 - 1960 Hand made in Sydney Australia Excellent vintage condition, a fine example of this maker's work. Highly collectible - a rare find. Great gift idea. Pates Pottery in Sydney operated from 1946 to 1980. From 1946 to 1980, Pates ceramic was a Sydney-based ceramic enterprise. Eric Pate, a renowned ceramic artist who studied pottery in England before returning to Australia to open his own studio, started the company. Pates Pottery used to make a wide variety of ceramic goods, including decorative pieces, dinnerware, & vases. The company's designs were recognised for their clean, beautiful lines, vibrant colours, & detailed patterns. Pates Pottery rose to prominence in the 1950s & 1960s for its mid-century modern designs, which were highly influenced by the work of Scandinavian designers such as Hans Coper & Lucie Rie. These designs had clean, geometric shapes & were frequently embellished with abstract patterns or bright stripes. Pates Pottery was also noted for its glazes, which were made using unique techniques developed by Eric Pate over the years. These glazes were highly valued for their rich, brilliant colours & ability to highlight the texture & form of the ceramics.
