A beautiful Old Sheffield Plate (silver on copper) warming or chafing dish by the important British silversmith Richard Morton & Co of Sheffield, late C18th This two part warming dish (the bottom separates to be filled with hot water) is a superb piece of craftsmanship & still fits together tightly but without effort. The silver plate is in good condition with just the right amount of copper bleed through from years of polishing. Underneath it is stamped with the mark Morton & Co (with a bird) for Richard Morton & Co Sheffield & dates from around 1785. An important early Georgian silversmith rteknowned for high quality silver & silver plate, a couple of his pieces are in the collection of the Met Museum in New York! Also underneath are an engraved crest of a fish's or mermaid's tail diving beneath the waves & the initials GH. This indicates that this was almost certainly part of a larger service of silver plate belonging to an important family with their own crest.
