Description
This is an original handprinted Cyanotype of a beautiful view of the Roman Forum that I encountered while visiting Rome in 2019. Rome's ancient architecture lends itself particularly well to this unique historic photographic process. I create Cyanotypes by hand coating art paper with light sensitive solutions. I then place a large format (6 x 9) negative directly onto the prepared paper & expose it to UV light. The final step is developing the print in water & adding a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. The result is a lovely Prussian Blue image that is absolutely unique! Cyanotypes (Cyan is a shade of blue) were invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel. He was an English astronomer & scientist who tried to find a way to make copies of his notes & called them blueprints (a method used by architects for many years!). Anna Atkins, the first female photographer, created a series of Photograms of plant life by placing the plants directly onto coated paper, allowing light to make a silhouette effect. I absolutely love what I do & look forward to sharing belle vues from my travels with you!
