Description
1960s Perigord France Travel Poster, Prehistoric Cave Paintings, Grottes de Lascaux, travel tourism holiday vacation wall art decor A charming original vintage travel poster promoting tourist destinations in the Perigord region, from the town of Montignac where in the caves of Lascaux reside some of the earliest prehistoric art in Europe. Country: France Year:1960s Lascaux is a network of caves near the village of Montignac, in the department of Dordogne in southwestern France. Over 600 parietal wall paintings cover the interior walls & ceilings of the cave. The paintings represent primarily large animals, typical local contemporary fauna that correspond with the fossil record of the Upper Paleolithic in the area. They are the combined effort of many generations and, with continued debate, the age of the paintings is now usually estimated at around 17,000 years (early Magdalenian). Lascaux was inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1979, as an element of the Prehistoric Sites & Decorated Caves of the Vzre Valley. The original caves have been closed to the public since 1963, as their condition was deteriorating, but there are now a number of replicas. Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear & tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn or stained. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, & edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the vintage charm. When framed these colourful & detailed posters, with vibrant colours can become a centre piece for any room, to remind us of a simpler time. These posters are sent as unframed. They will be delivered in a cardboard tube for protection.
