Description
This stoneware vessel was fired on August 15-16 for 39 hours in the barrel arch kiln at my studio. The temperature in the kiln climbed approximately 100 degrees an hour to 800 fahrenheit. At that point I began adding wood to a controlled climb up to 2300 degrees at hour 37. The last hour of stoking was to hold or soak the kiln at the top end temperature for a smooth, glassy surface on the ware. Ordinary table salt (three cardboard canisters) was added to the stoking ports at 20 minute intervals during the last hour of the firing. The sodium chloride separates at over 2000 degrees & turns into sodium vapor which encourages the developing wood ash to flux (melt) onto the outer surfaces of the pottery. The off-white spots that are seen on the pieces are refractory clay balls that prevent the work from fusing to the shelf during the firing process. The August 15-16 firing took five days for the kiln to cool sufficiently for me to be able to unload, clean & check the pieces for display. On this particular piece I used an old embossed license plate to impress texture into the handle. I this case it is from a 1962 Ohio auto plate. My food-safe white satin matte glaze is coated on the inside of the form for easy cleaning by hand or in the dishwasher.
