Atelier Gurin from Bouffioulx /Vintage ceramic candle holder 1960s, candle holder candlestick History The Walloon town of Bouffioulx is a major ceramic center in Belgium, Europe. Stoneware, also called grs, has been produced since the late Middle Ages. It is a very hard ceramic, baked at a temperature of around 1250 degrees Celsius. Due to this high firing temperature, the clay is glazed, making it impermeable. That is why stoneware was always used for pouring utensils or to manufacture containers in which chemical substances were stored. There are still potters active in Bouffioulx & you can also visit local museums there that give you more information about the theme. in Bouffioulx there were two important studios in the last century, one by Roger Gurin (1896 - 1954) & one by Edgar Aubry (1880 - 1943). They were especially important during the Interbellum, in the period between the two world wars.
