Etsy - McBurneyandBlack Antique Victorian | 1883 Linen Damask Banqueting Table Runner Heirloom Quality 3 Yards Long
Description
This is the most stunning runner of Victorian linen damask in superb condition, true heirloom quality. With an original handwritten inked laundry mark to one corner this fabulous damask dates from 1883. Each long side has a border of twining ivy leaves & a few inches further in is the main design so typical of the late Victorian period, when there was a real fashion for ferns. Here they form a scalloped scroll pattern beside beautiful calla lilies & foxgloves, & the centre of the cloth is scattered with more ivy leaves. The design runs lengthwise as a border along the 2 long selvedge sides only. The short ends have been very neatly hemmed by hand. The runner measures 3 yards (2.74 metres) long & the width is 27 inches (68.5 cms). This beautiful cloth would have been part of a set from a country house. Linen of this fine quality was delivered to the customer as a bolt of cloth & it was cut & finished by the housekeeper only as required. I acquired this with several other pieces of the same design & one of cloths had the 1883 date so I can be certain about the age of the linen, shown in the last photo. It is becoming more & more difficult to find damask cloths of this age & quality, let alone ones which have survived so well. The linen is of exceptional quality still with a wonderful crispness to it & a glorious silky sheen. There is no thinning to any of the cloth, just the very occasional pale mark but nothing of note - quite remarkable after all these years. Perfect for the top table at a wedding banquet, but could also be used to make blinds or cushions or napkins. White damask is very hard to photograph & I have darkened some to show the pattern more clearly. If you would like any additional images or more information please contact me.
