Description
National Atlas of the Departments & Possessions of France, published by Combette Editeur in Paris in 1850 by Victor Levasseur, engineer geographer of the city of Paris. Steel engraving. Dimensions: 19.5x14.4in (49.5x36.5cm). Frame & mat not included Victor Levasseur (1800-1870) was a nineteenth-century geographer. He was attached to the cadastre of the City of Paris, so he was responsible for drawing up Paris plans for major public & private works. But his work is outside his official duty. During the second half of the 19th century, more precisely, from 1845 to 1872, he created & published some twenty editions of the Atlas National Illustr des 86 Dpartements et des Possessions de la France (National Illustrated Atlas of the 86 Departments & Possessions of France). This Atlas, best known by the name of its author, is an essential tool for the study of French geography in the 19th Century. The maps are very precise because they were drawn according to the cadastral plans & also according to documents from the France's military archive & cartography department & from the Civil Engineering department. On these maps are represented the roads, railways & waterways. The departments are divided into arrondissements, cantons & communes. The maps are also framed by engravings, statistics & historical elements of each department, colony, or even, for certain editions, of each continent & planisphere. All these elements make these maps an essential document for the study of French regions from a geographical, economic, demographic & industrial point of view. For example, it will be very interesting to study the wine regions, the mining productions, the evolution of the railways or the history of Texas whose representation as the Republic of Texas independent state is one of the few in the world, its existence was brief (1836-1845). The decorative aspect never neglects the geography representing all the attributes of each region. We provide, of course, an original ancient document along with a certificate of authenticity issued free of charge. We provide high-quality pictures so you can notice each detail of the prints. Please watch them carefully so you won't miss any potential imperfection. 1850 Engraving Atlas Levasseur - Large Map French Department Hrault 19.5x14.4In Decoration, Print
