Dates to about 1890 ‘Windsor chairs’ are a generic form of English furniture – a woodland craft which evolved & diversified throughout the 18th and19th Centuries. They all share the common features of a solid seat, usually elm, & turned legs & stretchers – Ash or Beech. Many have a bent hooped back made by steaming the wood – Ash commonly because of its flexibility. Yew examples of antique windsors are much sought after This chair design is known as an ‘Oxford Windsor’ it doesn’t have a hooped back, but curved horizontal rails instead. Excellent colour & patina.
