The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared-optimized space telescope that is set to launch in 2021. The telescope is a collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), & the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), & is named after James E. Webb, who served as the second administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968. JWST is designed to be the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, with the goal of significantly improving our understanding of the universe. The telescope has a primary mirror that is 6.5 meters (21.3 feet) in diameter, which is more than twice the size of Hubble's mirror. This large mirror, combined with JWST's location in space, will enable it to observe some of the earliest galaxies & stars that formed after the Big Bang. One of the key features of JWST is its ability to observe in the infrared spectrum. Infrared light can penetrate dust & gas clouds that can obscure visible light, allowing the telescope to see through them & observe objects that would otherwise be hidden. JWST will be able to observe the formation of stars & planets, as well as the evolution of galaxies, from their earliest stages to the present day. JWST will be positioned at the second Lagrange point (L2), which is located approximately 1.5 million kilometers (930,000 miles) from Earth. At this location, the telescope will have a stable environment with a clear view of the sky, & will be shielded from the sun, Earth, & moon.
