Sharp From traditional Scandanavian Advent decorations to Hannukah traditions & German Lutheran Christmas trees, ornaments & decorations may have started at Christmas with a specific color palette, but now are made in every form & color one can imagine. What's surprising about Christmas decorations is how many pagan symbols & traditions are involved. Tertullian understood the pagan symbol of greenery & complained that Christians were using them to decorate dwellings. I cant think of anything more Christian than the nature God made, but supposedly it was quite the debate! From wreaths to candles, it seems nothing is without controversy. According to Goodhousekeeping Magazine, In Northern Europe, the pagans believed the sun was a wheel that rolled away from the Earth during the winter, & decorated their homes with wheels festooned with greenery & lights to coax the sun back toward them during winter solstice. As they began to convert to Christianity, the wreaths took on new symbolism. The evergreens & unbroken circle reminded them of God's eternal love & the salvation that Jesus brought to the world. Candles were surprisingly taboo as they were viewed as a torch in darkness, but Christians quickly turned the notion into being light in the world. Women were primarily responsible for decorating the home at Christmas & according to the British magazine, The Lady, any woman whose decorations were meager was said to be a disgrace to her household. Traditional colors of red & green come from holly bushes, but more sacred meaning was applied over the years. Today, no color is off limits for decorations for any season. While early decorations were used largely on trees, on doors & on & in windows, today one can find decorations even in the powder room. Want to have your own Etsy shop?
