Hand-built & Unique Ceramic House, fired using the Raku technique (tea-light candle included). This handmade candle holder (or incense cone) house will bring a lovely ambience to any room. Hand-built using Ashraf Hanna stoneware clay in my cosy Wiltshire studio in the UK. Texture was worked into the clay to look like a thatched roof & brickwork for the walls. When the clay had reached the leather-hard stage, I pierced the holes for the many windows & a couple of doors. This house is also ideal if you want to burn incense cones, the incense would have a great effect coming out of the windows & chimney! After bisque firing, this little house was glazed by hand using Raku glazes. Raku is a traditional Japanese technique. A rustic if somewhat precarious technique using all of nature's elements, earth, air, fire & water. The work is fired to a high temperature of almost 1000c in a gas fired kiln. It is then removed whilst still very hot & plunged into hay. The pieces catch fire & the carbon from the smoke infiltrates the unglazed parts turning them black. The glazed parts develop beautiful metallic lustres & this can be seen on the walls of this house. The pieces are then left to cool & then scrubbed clean with water. The result is a finish that is both unpredictable & beautiful. Hand wash, if necessary. Simply place a votive / tealight candle (included) in the house & enjoy the candlelight flickering through the windows. Alternatively, place an incense cone in the house & watch the incense float out of the windows & chimney. Care must be taken when touching the house as it can get very hot, especially when used with candles. Always place on top of a heat proof surface. Please remember: never leave burning candles unattended!
