Description
An antique blue transferware dinner plate with a pearlware body transfer printed in a rich blue. The pattern has a view pair of pack horses being led by gothic ruins framed by assorted foliage & flowers that extend to the narrow border around the rim. I am unfamiliar with the pattern & maker. I see similarities in this pattern to elements of the Monopteros pattern – particularly the Swansea version. The plate will date to c.1820. in this period manufacturers copied entire patterns so it is not that surprising to see elements in a design that appear to have been taken from another manufacturer’s work. I have added images of the Swansea & Rogers Monopteros pattern for you to compare with this plate. The plate is 9.6 inches (24.3cm) wide & weighs 360g. The plate is in good overall condition. There are areas of glaze missing from the from edge of the rim – these are the white areas around the rim in the images – mainly an inch long area at 2 o’clock, 0.3 inch areas at 4 o’clock & 10 o’clock. There are also a couple of other specks missing. There are a few utensil marks in the well from normal usage. Please consider these items are generally 50-200 years old, antique or vintage, & were made to differing manufacturing & quality standards to modern items. They have also been used & may show signs of that. Odd pinpricks & spots of kiln dirt in the glaze & other minor manufacturing flaws are not uncommon on china of this age - I can only mention those that I find the most noticeable. Please contact me if you need more detail on condition or further images. I will be happy to oblige. Antique Blue Transferware Dinner Plate Gothic Ruins C.1820
