Birds (Fglar in Swedish) have always featured heavily in Scandinavian design so it's no surprise to see their shape emulated in handcraft. This beautiful example has been handmade in what think is Oak. It is a 5 arm folding candle holder inspired by a popular Scandinavian design.There are many variants of this with some having just 3 'arms' to hold candles,whilst others have 6,7,8 or more.This piece has 5 as mentioned.All 5 arms have a metal candle cup at their end & they all move freely from side to side which as long as you balance the piece, Enables you to position your candles as desired.Lined up or spaced apart.The arms all fit upon a wooden peg for a hinge.At the top of this sits a small, Twice turned wooden knob.This can be twisted off & removed if you should need to.The wooden peg full of arms rests upon a base which has a stunning & very tactile bird shape at its front.This in turn is mounted upon a block of slightly darker wood which is secured to the actual base.On the base is the makers sticker which tells us that this originates from Mlndal which is situated just outside the city of Gothenburg,Sweden.As a bonus,I discovered this with a little bag of goodies tied to it! Some spare candle cuffs , Or 'ljus manschett' as they are called here in Sweden. 5 wooden ones & 5 metal ones which of course,I have included. Condition is great.The wood is of high quality & without any painful damage.As this is a vintage piece,There is some minor surface patina but only very subtle wear.Noteably,A rub or blemish on the back of the hind arm which appears more like a different tone within the wood than damage,Maybe occurred during construction ? I have cleaned the piece but there does remain a little used candle wax within the cups. Overall,It really is a stunning item which deserves to take pride of place.
