Description
The mug in the photos is the one that you will receive. It would make a great present for a goth or as a Halloween gift. It looks gnarled & hand made & wonky & drippy & a bit macabre. I made a batch of five black ones & two white - all with moths & butterflies on them. I hand make small batches of pottery in my tiny back garden studio. I'm a full time high school art teacher, so I can only make a few items a week - in the evenings & at weekends. My uncle was a painter & naturalist & he spent his life painting moths & butterflies (his paintings are in the Natural History Museum!). I have a couple of of his books at home & they inspired me. These are the first ones I have made & I am still learning. They have faults & blobs & runs all over them! I'm selling them cheaply - once I figure out exactly how to make them the price is likely to increase! How I made them: First, I hand slip cast the (white) earthenware clay into the basic shapes of the mugs, then fettled & smoothed them & added the drips to the rims. When they were leather hard I hand painted three layers of black underglaze all over the mugs, inside & out. I even painted the bases as an experiment. Next time I will leave them white because every time they are placed on a white surface, it leaves a mark. This mug has a lumpy bottom! When the black was dry I hand carved the shapes of the butterflies & moths through the black, leaving white outlines. I then spent an hour or so hand painting the butterflies & moths, layer by layer (I have filmed one of them to put on Instagram to show just how long it takes to make one!) I layered up the colours, beginning with white, then yellows, oranges & all the blended variations in between. Then I bisque fired them for 24 hours. When they came out of the kiln, the butterflies looked gorgeous! But the black was matt & cloudy & looked a bit plain, so I hand painted two layers of the fiery orange lava glaze inside, with a bit dripping over the top of the rim. I love the way the orange breaks over the black. I also added a layer of transparent glaze over the black underglaze & butterfly, to make it shiny. Then I returned it to the kiln for a second 24 hour firing. I think the orange glaze has turned out beautifully, but sadly the butterfly has lost some of its lovely detail & layering of colours. The transparent glaze seems to have melted into the underglaze & made block colours, instead of the lovely varied layers & detail. Your mug will arrive gift boxed & packaged in ethically sourced packaging - usually coloured tissue, but I also recycle bubble wrap from school or from my deliveries of glazes. So if I have included plastic, it has been repurposed or gifted to me by school! Made with love of moths & butterflies. x Hand Made Black Moth Mug With Hand Painted & Drippy Orange Glaze, Goth Mug, Butterfly Moth
