Description
#35950 Vintage hand blown semi-freeform art glass vase featuring stripes of translucent pink, purple, & green, signed Chapman & dated 1971. Attributed to Loren Chapman. Loren Chapman attended a seminar on glassblowing in the early seventies, which inspired him & a few friends to create several primitive glassblowing work spaces. in 1974, he applied for his first summer at the Sawdust Festival but had to blow glass offsite. Following his acceptance to a Masters program at Cal State Fullerton in glass, he built a booth in 1975 that enclosed a furnace so he could work onsite during the festival. It was the first time in Sawdust history where the public could enjoy a glassblowing demo. He remembers how small it was, too tight for the glassblowing pipes & much too easy for guests to reach their hands through to grab items. As the sole glassblower in the festival during the seventies, he built three more demo booths utilizing them as a personal booth space to exhibit his glass. It wasn't until the 1980's that the glassblowing booth you know today was built, as a collaboration between the growing collective of Sawdust glassblowers.
