#33441 Vintage Zelig Segal silver plate memorial Yahrtzeit candle holder with modern styling, circa 1985. This Yahrtzeit (memorial candle) container was made from a single sheet of metal (silver over brass); it is horizontally pierced, with a pocket pulled from the sheet (as if it had been clay or other plastic material) forming a place in which to set the memorial candles. The concave back forms a reflector for the flame & contains applied metal Hebrew letters forming the word Zechor or Remember. Zelig Segal, Israeli artist, designer, sculptor, & metalsmith Zelig Segal has devoted his career to the creation of ritual objects. His ingenious approaches to ceremonial art are fresh, imaginative, & infused with deep understanding of Jewish tradition. Provenance: Jerome Schottenstein Estate, Columbus Ohio. Jerome was was an American entrepreneur & philanthropist, co-founder of Schottenstein Stores Corp. The Schottenstein family were Lithuanian immigrants who began an extensive business empire in the late 19th Century. Schottenstein Stores owns stakes in DSW & American Signature Furniture; American Eagle Outfitters, retail liquidator SB360 Capital Partners, over 50 shopping centers, & 5 factories producing its shoes & furniture.
