Description
This is a very good example of Japanese Champleve enameling on brass. The vase opening is 4 diameter. The base measures 4.25. The height is 8.25. At its widest point (the dragon handles), it is 5.5. It is stamped on the bottom with Made in Japan. The vase is over 100 years old & is very good condition. As expected, it has some light enamel loss & a patina that has deepened with age. It has minor wear that is normal for a piece of its age. Translated from the French, Champlev means raised field. Champlev is an enamel process where the surface to be enameled is carved, engraved, stamped or etched with a design prior to enameling. The powdered enamel is fired into the design highlighting it. Vases decorated with Champleve tend to be much heavier than their later cloisonne relatives. There is much more metal present. On this vase, the fancy fish are frequently represented. Koi & Goldfish are largely associated with Asian or Eastern traditions & history. They are seen as symbols of good luck & prosperity. The colors of the Koi are highly sought after, much so with the golden colors of the goldfish. These are seen to bring plenty of wealth to those that care for it. This is why an abundance of Koi or goldfish in homes are also naturally sought after. Japanese legend also has it that the Koi travels against the current towards the dragon gate. The Koi which is able to break free out of the water turns into a water dragon. This symbol of strength & transformation makes it attractive to those that wish to become stronger through change.
