VINTAGE BOTANICAL ART PRINT The Heartsease or Pansy Violet (Viola Tricolor.) From the book The Moral of Flowers, 1833 (engravings by William Clark, formerly draughts-man & engraver to the London Horticultural Society, words & poetry by Rebecca Hey). An illustration from an early 19th century book - a lovely example from the time when interests in botany, science & natural history in general came beautifully together with poetry, literature & visual arts, expressing the newly realised resonance with the emotional & physical sides of human nature. The book was very popular in its time, with each gorgeous plant image accompanied by selected lines from acclaimed poets about each flower & Rebecca Hey's own original prose & poetry: ...Its more usual applications (names) are Heartsease & Pansy, the latter a corruption of the French pensee' ; as such, it forms part of Ophelia's wreath: 'There is pansies, That's for thoughts'... Reproduced from an antique book illustration. Respectfully & lovingly restored & enhanced digitally, to remove the non-artistic blemishes & colour fading A3 print, 297mm x 420mm.
