The courting candle was an adjustable timer used when a suitor came to call on a father's daughter. If the suitor was liked the candle would be set high on the spiral wooden peg. If the suitor was not liked the candle would be set low. Once the candle had burnt down to the top of the first ring the date was over & the suitor left. Measures 6 tall x 6 3/4 from handle to outer edge.This is an early American reproduction. This courting candle holder would blend in nicely with a primitive or rustic look. No scratches.
