This particular scarab is Scarabaeus viettei: like many scarabs, this beetle plays a vital role in nutrient recycling & soil health in the many ecosystems it inhabits. One variety of scarab (a nocturnal African dung beetle by the name of Scarabaeus satyrusis) is the only known non-human animal to navigate through its environment using the Milky Way as a guide. in ancient Egypt, the image of a scarab was used in hieroglyphic script to mean transformation or coming into being.
