Porcelain lithophane Santa's Surprise plug in night light. Handmade in our studios, it is practical & timeless, made using a lost art from the 1800's. When lit from behind, the light shining through the different thicknesses of the carving causes a highly detailed image to appear in front, almost magically. As you see, the illuminated image is so detailed, that it has a totally photographic quality to it! in addition, the relief of the carving gives the image a 3 dimensional quality when seen in person. These are not plastic, they are genuine porcelain. They will not fade, discolor, or warp with time. We have thousands of customers that have owned one of our lithophanes for literally decades. How many $30 gifts can you say that about? For this colored lithophane, we take it to another level! We hand apply a ceramic underglaze coloring to the back of the porcelain, while lit so we can see the placement of the color. We then fire the piece a second time, to permanently fuse the color to the porcelain. The color then gently diffuses through the porcelain, & combines with the shading produced by the thicknesses to give the image a truly photographic realism. It adds yet another dimension of beauty to this amazing art! Warm cookies & a glass of milk await Santa on Christmas eve, as he makes his rounds through the neighborhood. I start by carving the image in a translucent wax, with the wax lit from behind. I then take a plaster mold of this engraving, & we then cast a fine porcelain clay into this mold.
