Vintage Photo of Newsies at Skeeters Branch St Louis Missouri 1910 by Lewis Hines. 8 by 10 Lewis Wickes Hine (1874 -1940) was an American sociologist & photographer. Hine used his camera as a tool for social reform. His photographs were instrumental in changing child labor laws in the United States. Newsies were newspaper boys. Most of the newsboys came from poor immigrant families & sold papers in the afternoons & evenings, after their school finished. They bought papers at 50 per hundred, & sold them at 1 each for a profit of half a cent per paper.
