Antique Liberty's Hand Carved Japanese Table circa 1900 3 Wise Monkeys Design This example has a very decorative top surface depicting ‘The three wise monkeys’ – see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil sat amongst lily pads & lotus flowers a Buddhist inspiration. This decorative two tier table is 45cm tall made from fruitwood & hand carved with a top surface measuring 30cm x 30cm has serpentine legs terminating with a sweeping foot has a warm patina making it sit comfortably alongside other antiques as well as the more modern choices, this is an unusual table that is bound to make a statement. Please study the photos as this is in excellent condition as shown, it has had extra metal supports on the bottom underside to make the legs more stables as shown inthe photos Advertised in Liberty & Co catalogue of 1900 Arthur Liberty imported tables to be sold as an oriental range inspired by Gilbert & Sulivan’s play ‘The Mikado’ (1885). These tables originated from the coast of Japan where they were hand carved in the Japanese fishing villages; made in numbered sections to be assembled at the ‘Eastern Bazaar’ Regents Street in London. The tables were sold as part of the hand carved & inlaid range; there were several different designs available, all have extensive carving with many sharing the same lily decoration to the legs.
