Live edge large bowl in Australian Coolibah Burr, wood turning, wood carving, exotic burl bowl, treen Every time for the last 10 years or so i have been dropping subtle hints to my good friend & mentor Robert the Spruce that he won't fit into his house one day due to the unbelievable amount of his wood turning/carving on every single bit of available space. Finally he has given me some of his work to find a new home. Each piece has been made by his experienced hands and, just like me, he knows the origin of each piece of wood. This bowl is made from some stunning Australian Coolibah Burr. A member of the Eucalyptus family, Coolibah is a very hard & heavy wood. Predominantly from Eastern Australia, colour-wise the heart wood is a deep red with a vibrant red iridescence. in contrast the outer sapwood is a light creamy brown. in this piece both heart & sapwood & an amazing burr grain pattern. It is not very common for Robert to use anything other than local hardwoods but i can see why he chose this piece. I have had my eye on it for quite some time now & a mixture of flattery & flat out bribery (in the form of his favourite tipple) was required to get him to part with it. He has applied his 40+ years in woodturning in the creation of this bowl adding his own style to create a unique & eye-catching piece of wood art. He has left the burrs live edge intact & has created a raised lip on the bowl itself. Underneath Robert has left on most of the bark & due to the weight of the bowl has added 4 felt pads so as not to scratch any furniture. He has finished with Shellac & then a polyurethane lacquer for a hardwearing finish with a deep satin sheen. I can not express how much this woods colours really pop! As with all his pieces he has added is Spruce tree makers mark, in this case to the underside of the bowl.
