Description
Vintage, silverplate Guernsey jug, creamer, cream pitcher, milk can, cocktail shaker or small teapot - so many uses! It is actually a hundreds of years old design (in 1 to 3 gallon sizes), from the Guernsey area, designed to collect & distribute milk & cream from the famous Jersey cows in the area. These days the reproductions are much smaller, & used as cream pitchers, though there really is no limit. This one is particularly charming with a woven, wicker or rattan handle, & a hammered detail on the lid & body. Produced by Bernard Rice's Sons for Apollo, the company existed from the 1880's to 1958, but I'm inclined to think this is from the 1930's as it hearkens to the arts & crafts period with the hammered surface. I have not polished the piece, so the patina has given it a slight golden hue. The lid has a half circle handle, & a keyhole opening to allow easy pouring. The lid fits tightly, as it should but turns freely if you want to make it airtight. The inside is quite clean & without staining. Holds water perfectly well. Maker's mark on the underside reads: Apollo EPNS Made in USA by Bernard Rice's Sons Inc 3769 Closed measurements 5 1/2 inches (14 cm) tall to the top of the lid handle, 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide from handle to belly, 4 1/4 inches (11.4 cm) deep on either side of the belly. With lid removed, the lip is 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide without the spout. It should polish & shine nicely if that is preferred. I see one dent - see second to last photo. It is about an inch across, & easily accessible from the inside should the new owner wish to pop it out. The wicker is in good shape too, & - after taking photos - I have oiled it with food safe mineral oil so it does not become brittle. Very small dent on the lip of the lid too.
